I’ll admit it: When I first bought setting spray, I thought it was kind of a gimmick. Like, sure, a mist that “sets” my makeup sounded nice, but did I really need it? I figured it was one of those extra steps reserved for celebrity makeup artists and brides on their big day. But after some experimenting (and falling victim to way too many viral TikToks), I realized it’s so much more than just a finishing touch.

Through plenty of trial and error, I’ve learned setting spray can do everything from giving you a flawless base to keeping your lipstick from ghosting you after your first sip of matcha in the morning. And to put all of these hacks to the test, I used the E.L.F. COSMETICS Power Grip Dewy Setting Spray. This bi-phase mist is basically skincare and makeup insurance in one. It’s packed with aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, squalane, and green tea seed oil to keep skin dewy and hydrated, while the superfine mist keeps makeup locked in.

Here are the setting spray hacks the Internet swears by—and how they worked for me IRL.

It's about glam time you treated yourself.

6 Setting Spray Hacks Put to the Test

1. Spray Your Sponge, Not Your Face

Hack: Instead of misting your setting spray all over your finished look, spritz your makeup sponge until it’s saturated with setting spray and then bounce it over your finished face. Supposedly, it helps your base melt seamlessly into your skin for that no-makeup-makeup finish.

My Test: This one blew me away. I dampened my sponge with a lot of sprays (no one said this one wasn’t a little wasteful!), then pressed it all over. Suddenly my skin looked like skin again. No weird streaks, no powdery finish sitting on top, just smooth, natural coverage. By lunchtime, I usually start seeing the foundation separate around my T-zone, but this time it stayed fresh until my 10 p.m. double cleanse. Watch this hack in action below!

2. The Alix Earle Pre-Makeup Spray

Hack: This viral TikTok technique (thanks, Alix Earle!) is all about layering. First, drench your face in setting spray before you start your makeup, swipe on concealer, then mist another layer before blending it all out. The idea: It locks each layer in place and makes your base blend like butter.

My Test: I was skeptical because “dousing” my face before foundation felt wrong, but wow—my concealer melted in like a dream. My skin had that your-skin-but-better look, with zero patchiness. It’s definitely not my everyday move, but for nights I need my makeup to look flawless for hours, this hack earns its viral status. See Alix’s video here:

3. The Setting Spray Sandwich

Hack: Another TikTok favorite: Finish your makeup, mist your whole face, lightly set your T-zone with powder, then add one last mist of setting spray on top. The “sandwich” is supposed to keep everything locked in extra securely.

My Test: This one’s a little extra, but it sure does work. I wore it on a long day that went from work to dinner to drinks, and my makeup still looked fresh at midnight. The powder layer took down shine, while the sandwich mist kept everything soft and skin-like instead of cakey. If you need all-day staying power, this technique is worth the extra step. 4. Elizabeth Cee’s Eyeshadow Seal

Hack: After applying eyeshadow (but before mascara), close your eyes, and lightly mist your lids with setting spray. It’s supposed to lock your look in place and prevent creasing.

My Test: Spraying my actual eyelids felt…wrong. Like, are we really doing this? But it worked. My shadow stayed vibrant through the day, and I didn’t see the usual creases by mid-afternoon. Pro tip: Keep your brows raised while misting so the spray hits your whole lid without pooling in the folds. I wouldn’t recommend this hack for every single day, but when you need your eye look to go the distance, you can’t deny that it works. Check out Elizabeth Cee’s tutorial:

5. Brow Gel, but Make It DIY

Hack: Spray a clean spoolie with setting spray and brush it through your brows instead of (or on top of) brow gel. The spray is supposed to hold them in place without the crunchy, flaky finish some gels leave behind.

My Test: Honestly? This one was a miss for me. My brows looked decent for the first hour, but by lunchtime they were already slumping back down. It didn’t give me the definition or hold I usually get from a real brow gel, and by the end of the day they just looked a little sad. If you’re in a pinch, sure, it might work as a quick fix, but I’ll be sticking with my tried-and-true gels for brows that actually stay put.

6. Lip Liner + Powder + Spray Combo

Hack: Line your lips, fill in lightly with lipstick or gloss if you want, then dust a little translucent or matching powder over the liner (just very gently). Finish with a spritz of setting spray. The powder is supposed to help absorb oils and set the liner, while the spray seals it in so it doesn’t budge.

My Test: I was hopeful about this one. The liner and powder did help with some staying power (lipstick edges looked cleaner for longer), but the setting spray part didn’t really make the difference I expected. After a few sips of water, the color still moved, and the finish got patchy.

Final Thoughts

I started this experiment thinking I’d debunk a bunch of gimmicks, but honestly? Setting spray is way more clutch in a makeup routine than I gave it credit for. The sponge trick has become part of my everyday routine, the eyeshadow hack is now non-negotiable for nights out, and the setting spray sandwich is my new secret weapon for marathon makeup days.

If you’re already a setting spray fan, give these hacks a try and see which ones stick (pun 100% intended). And if you’re still on the fence, start with the E.L.F. COSMETICS Power Grip Dewy Setting Spray—because trust me, you’ll never look at a little mist the same way again.
