“It mimics natural shadow and structure, which is why it reads more sculpted and refined on the face,” Gomila explains.

The Difference Between Cool-Toned And Warm-Toned Makeup

Much like the way it sounds, warm-toned makeup refers to deeper, bronzier undertones like yellow, orange, red, and peach. Whereas when it comes to cool tones, Gomila says, “Think taupe over bronze, rose over peach, and blue-based reds instead of coral.”

Undertones aside, “Warm tones bring the face forward, and cool tones carve it out,” the pro shares. “They add definition and contrast.”

As we noted above, cool tones aren’t designed to give you that lit-from-within glow—they are more for sculpting. You may have to put a little more thought into your cool-toned placement, whereas with warm tones, they can be used a bit more casually (in our opinion).

Dos And Don'ts of Wearing Cool-Toned Makeup

While makeup truly has no rules, if we’re looking at this from a professional viewpoint, there are certain application techniques and best practices the pros follow when using cool shades.

DON’T use on very warm or olive skin tones. “Cool shades can turn ashy quickly if the complexion isn’t prepped correctly,” Gomila says. “So I wouldn’t apply straight cool tones without adding warmth back into the skin.”

DO use cool tones to sculpt. “They mimic real shadows better than warm shades,” Gomila explains. “They’re perfect for soft, elevated eye looks and natural-looking contour.”

Adds Paul, “Contour should almost always lean cool. A true contour mimics the face's natural shadow, which is grayish in tone. Even the warmest skin tones have cool-toned shadows, so using something too warm can read as orange or muddy, rather than sculpted.”

DON’T use only cool tones for full glam. “You still need a touch of warmth to keep the skin alive,” Gomila says.

DO use cool tones on the cheeks and lips. “They can balance warmer complexions through contrast, or enhance cooler undertones for a more tonal, cohesive look,” Paul explains. “Most natural lip colors lean cool, which is why shades like rose, mauve, plum, and even neutral browns feel so flattering and timeless. A cool-toned liner adds definition, especially on warmer skin, and a blue-based red is a classic trick for making teeth appear whiter, since warmer reds can emphasize yellow tones.”

DON’T add cool tones without balance from warm tones. If you’re going for a simple sun-kissed glow, you can get away with warm tones only. But when it comes to cool tones, warmth is needed to complete the look. “Especially on very warm or olive skin tones, too much cool tone can look flat or ashy,” Paul says. “Pairing cool elements with warmth elsewhere keeps the look dimensional and modern.” 

Why Is Cool-Toned Makeup Trending Right Now?

Cool-toned makeup looks are a fit for where we’re going in the trend cycle. “We're moving away from heavy warmth and into more natural, skin-real makeup,” Gomila shares. “Cool tones align perfectly with that shift. They look effortless but intentional. There's also a strong ‘90s influence right now. Taupe eyes, sculpted skin, muted lips. It all naturally leans cool.”

Paul agrees: “Makeup trends are cyclical. We’re seeing a shift away from the warm, bronzy aesthetic that dominated the 2010s, and a return to the cooler tones of the ’90s and early 2000s. As fashion leans into Y2K and ’90s references, makeup naturally follows. Think supermodel neutrals, sculpted contours, and silvery metallics making a comeback.”

Final Thoughts

While cool tones should still be applied more strategically than warm tones, they’re currently being used more freely. Whether in terms of lip liner, or the more obvious contour, cool tones are designed for shadow and sculpt. They have blue, pink, taupe, or gray undertones, whereas warm-toned makeup has yellow, orange, or red undertones. When warm and cool tones work together cohesively, the result is a stunning, carved-out look.
