When we think about makeup kit essentials, it’s easy to focus on the big staples (like foundation or the perfect nude lipstick) and overlook the must-haves that take your look the extra mile—literally. Case in point: Setting spray. As one of the hardest workers in a makeup bag, a few spritzes can fix your masterpiece into place. But what does makeup setting spray do outside of, well, set? We’re breaking down what setting spray does, ways to use setting spray, what sets it apart, and the best setting spray options to add into your rotation.

It's about glam time you treated yourself.

What Is Setting Spray?

Just like setting powder, the name tells us exactly how setting spray works. Setting spray is a liquid mist that is sprayed over makeup to set it into place with your desired finish (more on that below). It’s typically used after makeup application as the last step in a routine, helping to retain that just-applied “fresh” makeup look throughout the day. Like a hairspray gives your hairstyle staying power, a setting spray does the same for your makeup.

What Does Setting Spray Do?

Outside of its main job of setting makeup, setting spray is a surprisingly versatile product that comes with a slew of benefits for your makeup and your skin.

  • Helps makeup last longer and reduces the need for touch-ups.

  • Keeps makeup from smudging, fading, or melting.

  • Protects your makeup from sweat, dirt, or pollution.

  • Helps refresh and revitalize your look midday.

  • Can add a matte, soft-focus, or dewy finish.

  • Can offer sun protection or skincare benefits, depending on its ingredients

Is Setting Spray Different From Face Primer?

At first glance, setting spray and makeup primer might appear one in the same. They both extend the wear of makeup, right? Yes and no. The modalities of setting spray and face primer make them much different from one another. Face primer is used like a base coat to create a smooth canvas for applying makeup (aka “prime”) and can help temporarily reduce the appearance of fine lines and texture. Setting spray is like the top coat of your makeup routine—finishing and perfecting.

So while they both help your makeup last longer, they do so in different ways. In fact, they can be used together or interchangeably depending on your skin’s needs.

Do I Need Setting Spray?

While setting spray can be extremely beneficial, it’s often considered an optional step. But there are certain circumstances that make setting spray an especially attractive addition to your beauty routine. Expecting to be in a humid or rainy environment? Setting spray is particularly suited to helping keep makeup from melting and sliding around. Also, if you have dry skin, many setting sprays contain hydrating ingredients (like hyaluronic acid, aloe, or glycerin), which help the skin retain its moisture. This also helps extend the flexibility of your makeup and helps avoid creasing and caking.
